Today's lesson is about goal setting and not waiting until you lose weight to start working toward goals you have set for yourself.

The suggestion is to just sit down for 10 minutes and write down things you want to accomplish. Then look at that list and see how many of these things you can actually start now and not wait until you have lost weight,

The idea is to just do it now, you don't have to wait to start working on goals. Take a long-term goal and break it into smaller goals and start working on achieving that first step.

I really dislike the example given about Maggie being invited to the beach and she did not want to go at first and the example with her response card was that she went to the beach and it meant she was acting like a "normal" person. -- Okay, this implies she was thinking she wasn't "normal" - who defines normal anyways? Who is setting the standards?

Being normal is subjective - it is what you think it is. Too often we get caught up in comparing ourselves with others and then defining ourselves based on someone else's accomplishments. To me, that is not "normal".

Sorry, but today's lesson hit a nerve with me. I grew up in a dysfunctional family and I remember one day my brother came home after visiting a friend and he was elated about something. He declared, "I just found out that we are normal, other families fight just like we do." So, after all those years he thought we weren't 'normal", that is, behaving like others, and then he finds out others have the same behavior.

I know this is not what this lesson is suppose to be, but we have to stop comparing ourselves with others and just focus on being the best we can be.

I run and participate in local races, but I do not compare myself with other runners because we are all in different stages in our training. I do not train to be fast, so it'd be self destructing to compare myself with someone who has been training to place in the top three. Instead, I tell myself that I just want to finish strong and run the best that I can for that day. Some days I run better than on other days. But that is okay and it is "normal" for me not to always beat my previous time.

So, let's define "normal" as setting goals and then taking that first step and then another and another until we reach that goal we set for ourselves and stop comparing what we have done with what other people accomplish.

    The word normal has been misappropriated to mean, "good" in common speech, so I think that's why it bothers you. By academic definition it must include comparisons, because a "norm" is similar to an average or a mode, the most commonly occurring piece of data that one is examining. I think the idea or phrase we should be using is "acceptable to oneself."

    I think you should rewrite that chapter in Beck. One of the pitfalls of a prescribed plan of doing things; each of us has a different "normal", good on you for saying whoa and determining your own normal! emoticon emoticon emoticon
