I have been on Sparkpeople for 6 years now. It has changed my life completely and I cannot begin to thank this community enough for all of the help it has provided me.

I graduated with a BA in classics from Reed College. I now teach SAT Prep and I am preparing my applications to go to graduate school in either classics or ancient philosophy. I want to be healthy. I want to like the way I look. I want to have energy and keep up being a good, well-rounded student. I want to enjoy my life and live it to its fullest!

How I Became Over 170lbs (with a small 5'4 frame):
I loved Reed. The wacky lifestyle where students discuss the politics of the Coca-Cola corporation, the physics of a penny falling off the empire state building, the beauties of Aeschylus' Greek, and debate whether Nietzsche is better than strawberries appeals to me. Especially when all of these discussions are held looking over the beautiful canyon or watching friends practice fire-dancing or tightrope walking.

However, Reed has a large workload plus all the stresses of learning to live on one's own, navigating dorms and social networks. As such, I gained the freshman twenty-five and added another fifteen pounds to that by the winter break of my sophomore year. When I came home in December, I weighed 170 lbs and I had a 34.5" waist. I was devastated.

My Weight-loss Journey:
So, over winter break I took myself to task. I lost 10 lbs an 2" around my waist. However, I did not really make an effort to maintain it. I felt that if I made a serious commitment to dieting I would have to stop making 2am biscuits for my friends and eating my favorite cream of tomato soup. After a very stressful semester, I had gained back 5.5 lbs and 0.75".

Now I'm ready for a much longer fight and a real change. I'm making my food healthier without parting with my favorite dishes. I'm beginning to exercise consistently. I never believed it would happen, but I have energy again! I'm loving my work and I'm actually enjoying my workouts.

At the weight I began the fight (around 170lbs), my weight alone posed a moderate health risk. Now, my BMI is healthy and my weight poses no health risk by itself and now, finally, I'm within the rang on the traditional height and weight tables. (http://www.webmd.com/diet/tc/interactive-

Over summer 2008, my energy level increased, my intellectual curiosity and artistic urge came back. I began to Dreyfus's lectures on (and reading) Heidegger's Being and Time, reading Nietzsche's lectures on the Pre-Platonic philosophers, and took a full year of Latin (and got an A!)

My first semester back at Reed went pretty well. I lost about 15 lbs and managed my time, stress, and energy levels much better. I even fit back into my size 4 black satin ball gown and wore it to winter formal! My second semester my grades were great and I felt happy and wonderful. I lost about another 10lbs too!

This summer and this year, I'm going to try to do well in school, write an amazing thesis on Plato, tone up my arms, hamstrings, and stomach and finally get bikini-ready. Maybe I'll even get a scholarship for grad school!

The first semester of my thesis went really well and I am down past the 120 lb mark. However, I've been hovering between 116-112 lbs and unable to have a stable weight and stable loss. The other problem is that I am not doing enough strength training which is why my weight can get to around 112 but I still don't feel bikini-ready.

During my second semester, I had a tough time. I was finishing my thesis and really having trouble getting the 80 page document together, two of my friends died in tragic accidents, I was taking a heavier workload than ever, and trying to figure out what I was going to do the next year to make any money. The stress and lack of sleep got to me and I started to fall back into some of my old food habits. I gained back 10lbs (setting my weightloss back by about 1 year) and felt miserable.

However, I've gotten myself back up. I've started putting a larger emphasis on strength training as well as cardio to try and make my body happier at a lower weight. I am also taking iron supplements and ironically eating more fat (I added almonds into my diet), which seems to make me feel better. I want to be fit and healthy. I've lost 8 of the 10lbs I gained and I am working at trying to establish habits (such as yoga and pilates) that can help me fight off the stress of graduate school so that I do not ever have this problem again!
